christmas eve crafting

Rye's Porcupine Creation

Apple's Creation

I must admit, I was feeling a bit overwhelmed with my mile long to-do list on Christmas Eve. All of the wrapping, cookies, and sewing not-yet-done was leaving me on edge. But somehow when the older children sat down and started to sew with me I was reminded what the holiday spirit was all about. I love how organic and spontaneous our creating and time together is when we all have our hands busy.

advent calender

Advent Calender

The advent calender in our home is always much, much more than a daily countdown to Christmas. This year it has already been the inspiration for day after day of dramatic play, animals finding secret hiding places, peek-a-boo for dollies and babies, a magical land to travel to and from the magical land of the nativity scene :), and endless repetitive fine motor fun for baby Piper. I love that to my kids a calender is never just a calender.

O Christmas Tree

The kids are enthralled with the Outdoor Christmas Tree in our front yard. I'm always amazed by their amazement. How something as simple as a tree can provide them with a thousand forms of entertainment and a million scenarios to act out. They've decided that the Outdoor Tree needs ornaments, as well as lights, and I'm not exactly sure what kind of ornamentation they have in mind but I'm sure they will remind me tomorrow. Apple has already decided which scraps of fabric she's saving for her "nornaments."

Rye, especially, loves the tree. And I love him. He got his first hair cut today, a cut that wasn't a trim, and I love that I can really see the wonder in his face in the photo above. He's still not sure about the cut, he likes his hair "yellow and down down down" but after reviewing the photos from today he told me, "I sure look handsome." Awwww.

Pants for a Pirate Princess

Well, I've done it! I've finally mastered the concept of elastic. Simple for a lot of folks I know, but I just couldn't get the hang of it. For a long time. But I've done it! And the pants were elaborated on from a pattern, and that whole pattern concept worked out quite well. Don't know why I've been resisting it so much :). So here they are. Big Brother has a pair of "pirate pants" that he loves, so little Apple decided she needed a pair of her very own pirate pants, too. They turned out wonderfully.

Thanksgiving Sweetie

I finished another dress for my 2 year old daughter just in time for Thanksgiving. I created this one without a pattern, but I surprised myself and cut a pretty accurate fit. And she loves it! She can't wait to wear it tomorrow and show off how she looks like a "princess."

Fabric Frenzy

Since moving into this house 3 years ago I have never had a clear vision for the kids room, and if I had for a moment it was generally right before the discovery of a new pregnancy. But I finally feel like I've got a plan, and that alone is soothing to my creative soul. Some of the new fabrics arrived for the bed linens and they are wonderful. My inspiration came from Heather Ross' line of fabric Lightning Bugs and Other Mysteries. I love the little gnomes! And it's perfectly whimsical for a little boy and little girl. I can't wait to start sewing!

funny bunny

I've really been wanting to delve into my sewing, so I thought stuffed animals for my kids would be a pretty simple endeavor with pleasing results. Well, it wasn't actually that simple (at least not to me!) but the kids thought it was cute. I just need to figure out how to finish (close up the stitches at the end.) Work in progress...

an apple a day...

Here are a few images of my new favorite "apple" items. I love the bold, punchy colors, particularly of the sheet set. It would be fun to scale it down to toddler size for my daughter, Apple, in a cuddly blanket, or stuffed fabric animals. For purchasing info, click here...

i heart summer weddings

I absolutely love weddings, so when one of my best friends announced she was getting married I was thrilled! Last weekend I enjoyed their reception, something I've dubbed "An Afternoon in the Garden..." It truly was a lovely afternoon, and even more lovely witnessing the happy couple's union in front of all of their family and friends.

Download Free Fonts!

Recently, for my birthday, my husband sent me a really cute e-mail with the Happy Birthday song. When I thanked him later for it, he mentioned he had looked for a long time to find a font to make it look pretty. I said, "yeah, I think you ended up using Chick, right?" He said, "I can't believe you know the names of the fonts!" Well, I have to admit it, in my effort to make things a little more beautiful, I have been known to go font-crazy. I just heard about dafont, where you can download free fonts to your mac or pc. Check out Joyful Juliana, my new favorite.

New Beginnings

Here it is. My first post. My first blog, too... It's been a week of firsts, and somehow it all started with the purchase of a sewing machine. I used to be what I'd call a "crafty" person, bold with color, generous with glitter~ until I had my first baby four years ago. Then suddenly, I realize, my definition of artistic vision seems to only include the free-hand masterpiece my son, Rye, colored on the bathroom wall. So now, three babies and a million diapers later, I am going to Re-Igninte my passion for All Things Beautiful! Like I said, the purchase of the new sewing machine really was the catalyst for all of this, and what way better than a blog to document the journey of my creative self? Everything's game-- from the very first thing I have ever sewn in my life (the dress my daughter, Apple, is sporting in the photos!) to a new paint color on my wall! I am so excited to embark on this experience!
